Supplemental Instruction: Notes for Students
What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?
- A learning enhancement program designed to organize and improve the ways in which students prepare for class
- An opportunity for students to participate in a smaller group focusing on those aspects of the class material which may be more difficult or benefit from alternative study methods.
- SI is not a substitute for class attendance but rather, as the name suggests, a supplement to it.
What are SI sessions and how are they conducted?
- The SI leader schedules and conducts several group meetings a week
- During sessions, the SI leader uses interactive learning strategies that encourage involvement, comprehension, and synthesis of the course content
- Effective study techniques and strategies are incorporated
- SI sessions are open to all students in the subject and are attended on a voluntary basis. All sessions are conducted on a drop-in basis; there is no need to schedule attendance or to attend every session.
How are subjects chosen?
SI targets historically difficult subjects.
